Year of the Spark – Painting on Plexiglass

February 9, 2015

The artwork posted below is from lesson three of “Year of the Spark.“

 img199 img198

First, I attached the old photo and collage bird parts face down to the plexiglass. I then painted around the image with various shades of paint. Next I scratched the word “Fly” and made other marks in the paint.

Both scanned images are the same except that one has a red background and the other a dark brown.  Adding a contrasting paper behind it helps define the scratches and marks.

This was a really fun project! I’ll be doing more of this type of work in the near future.

Thanks Lynn and Carla for the spark! 🙂

Thanks for visiting.

100 Faces in 365

January 19, 2015

littleone

I’ve recently joined a facebook group called “100 Faces in 365”. The title pretty much says it all.

The challenge is to create and post 100 faces in a year. Doing 100 originals may prove to be difficult, so I will have to be a bit more creative and do a few in photo shop, collage etc…

I am, however, looking forward to this challenge. Whether I finish it or not, the real goal is to keep me motivated to practice my art a little each day.

This is # 5… It’s acrylic paint and pencil on a 4 1/2″ piece of wood.

Year of the Spark – First Lesson

January 15, 2015

First post for 2015 is dedicated to a new online class I’m taking with artists Carla Sonheim and Lynn Whipple. “The Year of the Spark” is a year long class that I’m hoping will take me outside my comfort zone and help me take a few more risks creatively.

Both Carla and Lynn have such wonderful and unique styles. I still struggle with who I am and where I’m going with my art. Maybe as an artist, this feeling is not unusual, but part of the continuous growth cycle. However, I’m hoping 2015 will be the year that I dig deep and discover a style I can nourish and develop that is all my own.

First lesson of the year, to draw what Carla calls one liners…drawing with a continuous line, without picking up your pen. Free style drawing quickly without thinking about it too much. Not thinking about it… well that in itself is a huge hurdle. It was hard at first, but as it turned out, drawing without thinking about it can be very freeing. Below are a few of the one liners.

And now the result of turning one of them into a piece that we felt was frame worthy for our studio. This funky little guy showed up a few times, so I thought he must be the one to take further and turn into a finished piece.

A few of the items in the 12 Days of Art Giveaway.

I’m really excited about this giveaway. The idea came to me right before Thanksgiving, perfect timing…right! I really wanted to do something different and special to say “thanks” for all the encouragement and support I’ve received this year as an artist. So for the first 12 days of December I am giving away something I’ve made, it may be a small painting, handmade Christmas cards, ornaments, mixed media collage on wood, etc…

The best part for me will be sending these one-of-a-kind pieces of art to the 12 winners. They’ll be sent out before Christmas with much love and gratitude.

Feel free to “Enter” (by commenting) all twelve days or just on the day(s) that the art/items interest you. Each morning I will post the artwork being given away that day and at (10 pm) a winner will be chosen at random and notified on their FB page.

Please share the daily posts with friends and family too. The more the merrier, ‘Tis the season to share, share, share.

Preparing for Art Crawl 2014

November 12, 2014

I’m down to the wire now preparing for the 2nd annual Polk Museum of Art’s Art Crawl. I was part of last years fair too, and it was a great event!  Even through an entire day of rain there was an abundance of people who braved the weather to support our local arts community.

I know there will be things missed and pieces I’d really like to have ready that will not be completed, however, I’m so looking forward to another year of sharing my work and meeting new people.

These two assemblages have been in the works for several weeks and posted earlier at various stages. They’re now finished, and I must say,”I’m quite happy with how they came together.” 🙂
