Special Anniversary Post.
I along with 350 plus artists/alumni from around the globe are celebrating a one year anniversary this month. We became acquainted last summer while taking Kelly Rae Roberts e-course, Flying Lessons. During that time Kelly offered a closed Facebook group in hopes that we would share, support and encourage one another on our creative biz journey.
Guess what? It worked, it’s been a year, and we’re still an active flourishing group. I am so grateful to be included among this talented group of women. And my hope is that we will continue to gently push, motivate and cheer for each other, as well as, discover mutual friendships.
As the one year anniversary was approaching we began to brainstorm and discuss ideas about how we wanted to celebrate. The common thread throughout seemed to be about giving back. We wanted to give back to others some of the good will, support and encouragement we had received during the past year. We also agreed the most efficient way to give back would be within our own local community.
There were no rules, we would be able to give back anyway we chose. It could be monetary, merchandise, time and services, whatever worked best for each individual. We would then share what each of us chose to do through a blog hop.
We also decided to harvest our funds together and donate a few classes to the next Flying Lessons e-course which begins on Monday, September 17, 2012. And when Kelly Rae heard about what we were doing she graciously decided to match our offer. I believe the final count is 8 classes and with Kelly matching that’s a total of 16 classes. Wow, that’s pretty exciting!!! Please follow the Fly Tribe link above for more details about the giveaway.
Now, to get to the “Giving Back” part… I chose to donate various art supplies to Creative Journey’s.
Creative Journey’s is a locally owned experiential art studio located in historic downtown Lakeland. It was started by fellow artist and long time friend Claudia “Iris” Van Horn on October 10, 2011.
The idea of an experiential art studio means that the focus is on the process not the end product. The studio explores many materials, such as painting, mixed media, clay, jewelry making, just to name a few, as well as poetry and meditation.
Iris will work with each person individually and the whole group collaboratively. She believes in immersing her students in the creative process and that art is an expression of what is inside a person.
She wants us to feel our expression is valid, when one is validated there is then a safe space to explore, grow, stretch and become excited. It is from this space that art is born…and where one becomes willing to learn.
Iris recently started a new program that is very dear to her heart, “Summers Heather,” a weekly art program designed especailly for women. It teaches and encourages them to express themselves in a constructive way. We’re using art as the vehicle for self-esteem and empowerment in order to grow and evolve.
“I acknowledge fully that as I am teaching, so it is that I am learning.” Iris Bloom
